Client Story: Scarlett

Meet Scarlett! Scarlett is this month's Client Feature at the Samaritan Center!

Scarlett’s path into homelessness began while she was caring for her father, who was a constant source of love and support in her life. At the same time, her mother was struggling with mental health challenges, and Scarlett could no longer remain in her mother’s home. Despite doing everything she could for her family, Scarlett found herself without stable housing. In 2021, her father sadly passed away, a loss that deeply impacted her, but she carried his encouragement with her as she continued forward.

During her time without housing, Scarlett became a client at the Samaritan Center, where she connected with her caseworker, Brittany. Scarlett describes her experience working with Brittany as outstanding. Through the Samaritan Center, Scarlett received essential support including food, clothing, access to showers, and guidance through housing resources. These services helped her meet her basic needs while she worked toward stability.

Brittany supported Scarlett every step of the way on her housing journey. She assisted Scarlett with applying for Section 8, exploring multiple housing options, and securing placement in Project Room Key, which provided temporary shelter while she waited for permanent housing. When Project Room Key ended in 2024, Brittany continued advocating for Scarlett, helping her connect with Vagabond Ventura County and working in collaboration with Behavioral Health. Through these combined efforts, Scarlett was ultimately selected for Permanent Supportive Housing.

Scarlett has now been housed for four weeks, marking a powerful new chapter in her life! Reflecting on her experience at the Samaritan Center, she shared, “They gave me back my life. When everything failed me, they saved my hope, my dignity, and my life.”
